MAYhem, indeed!

Over 1,000 fans flocked to the Kingston Memorial Centre by the light of the super moon last Saturday night for KDG’s season opener: an unqualified success. Four teams rocked the track in two action-packed bouts — what a great way to kick off derby season in Kingston!

The night opened with the introduction of KDG’s newest teams, the graveyard-risen Skateful Dead and the post-apocalyptic Rogue Warriors. Both teams have a busy season coming up, with away games and scrimmages as well as a house-league championship that, judging by MAYhem, will be a nail-biting rivalry all year long! Both teams recently welcomed new players after KDG’s spring draft and the combination of the KDG veterans’ expertise and the energy of the league’s newest recruits made for an exciting and well-played bout. The teams fought hard for the full 60 minutes, and the Dead made an amazing near-comeback in the second half, but in the end the Rogues took the first victory of the year with a score of 141-115. The Dead will certainly be out for revenge at the next home game for these two teams; you won’t want to miss their rematch at Carnival Carnage on July 14.

Our Disloyalists took centre stage in the second half of the evening with an impeccably played bout against the South Simcoe Rebel Rollers. Kingston’s team quickly took and held an impressive lead, showcasing their many skilled jammers and some amazing new strategies, illustrating beautifully that strategic planning and practice is key in this hard-hitting game. Final score was 203-40 for the Disloyalists.

Want to watch KDG’s star continue to rise? You can see the Disloyalists in action this Saturday, May 12 against Toronto Roller Derby’s DVA-s at the Bunker in Toronto, and the Rogue Warriors take on the Oz Roller Girls at home on June 16th.

Don’t forget, tickets for all our home bouts are available online, and it’s not too late to buy season tickets!
