A preview of the Carnage to come

Do you have your tickets yet for Carnival Carnage tomorrow? This is going to be an event to remember, with two hard-hitting bouts and star-studded entertainment, including the always fantastic Swamp Ward Orchestra and a busker team of poi spinners, jugglers, and more.

The first bout features a rematch between Kingston’s very own home team rivals, the Skateful Dead and the Rogue Warriors. The last time these teams met, it was a nail-biter, with the Rogues taking a solid lead only to have the Skateful Dead stage an astonishing comeback in the second half. The Rogues took the win, but not by much, and it’s a sure bet that the Dead will be out for blood and revenge on Kingston’s post-apocalyptic Warriors.

The Rogue Warriors, coached by Reba Smackintire and Glitter Bomb, are likely to be relying on the hard hits that have served them well this season and piloting some new strategies they’ve been working on together. Newer players AmandaTory Sentence and Tinker Ring’rbell have become integral team members and will be featured on the track. Team captains Zesty Enterprise and Kimminent Danger will be key players to watch as well.

The Dead, under the leadership of coach Sir John Eh Smackdonald and co-captains Careless Whips-her and Polly Slamory, have a number of new players on their team, having benefited from our recent drafts, but those players now have three months of intense practice under their belts and are no longer the rookie skaters they once were. New additions to the Dead lineup to watch for on the track include WD Forte as well as Boney L’Ass in her first bout ever. Returning to the track from the injured list is league founder Skate at Home Mom, so watch for her as well — this momma is ready to skate fast and hit hard.

The second bout will showcase Kingston’s Disloyalists against Rideau Valley’s Riot Squad. The Disloyalists have had a near-undefeated season this summer, losing only one match by just eight points in the final seconds against Royal City’s Brute-Leggers. Rideau Valley has recently become a full WFTDA league member, and the league has repeatedly proven itself in such tournaments as Beast of the East, not to mention contributing two members to Team Canada at the Roller Derby World Cup. The Derby Nerd ranks the Riot Squad and the Disloyalists at a fairly similar skill level, but the Riot Squad are more experienced — who can say how this bout will go? Two of their newer players have come to shine on that team as well: Jamburglar and Ker-Osene. Look out for them on the track as well as all your favourite Disloyalist jammers and blockers.
